TOWARDS BETTER HEALTH - World Heart Day!

WORLD HEART DAY - SEP 28, 2008

Our heart is very vulnerable to damage from the things we do to it, like smoking, eating an unhealthy diet or putting it under stress. There are many risk factors associated with coronary heart disease and stroke. The major risk factors that have a high prevalence across the world are:

1.      Tobacco use

2.      Alcohol use

3.      High blood pressure

4.      High cholesterol

5.      Obesity

6.      Diabetes

7.      Physical inactivity

8.      Unhealthy diets

You will not necessarily develop cardiovascular disease if you have a risk factor.  But the more risk factors you have, the greater is the likelihood that you will, unless you take action to modify your risk factors and work to prevent them compromising your heart health. The above mentioned risk factors are modifiable where by you can incorporate healthy lifestyle and behavioural changes and reduce your risk. Get a complete health check up done if you have not undergone one in the recent past, and meet your dietitian to make the necessary diet changes.
